How to remove location from photos on iPhone
Photos from your iPhone usually carry the exact GPS spot where they were taken. Here’s how to stop that, remove it when you share, and check what a photo gives away.
Check a photo first: our free photo location checker shows exactly what a photo reveals, on a map, without uploading it.
1. Stop new photos saving location
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
- Tap Camera, then choose Never.
Photos you take from now on won’t contain GPS coordinates. Older photos keep theirs, so read on.
2. Remove location when you share
- In Photos, select the photo (or several) and tap Share.
- Tap Options under the preview at the top.
- Turn off Location, tap Done, and share.
This only affects that share, and only location. The date, time and iPhone model still go along.
3. Remove location from a photo in your library
- Open the photo and swipe up (or tap ⓘ).
- Tap Adjust next to the map.
- Choose No Location.
To do many at once, select them, tap …, then Adjust Location and choose No Location.
4. Remove everything, not just location
Location is the most sensitive detail, but photos also carry the exact date and time, your iPhone model and dozens of camera settings. To share a copy with none of it:
- Use the photo location checker’s Remove & download button, which redraws the photo with no metadata at all.
- Or use Scrubshot: with Remove Metadata on, every redacted copy is a brand-new image, and it hides faces and personal details in the picture itself.
Do apps remove location automatically?
Many social apps strip location when they compress uploads, but don’t count on it. Files sent as email attachments, through cloud links, AirDrop or “original quality” options often keep every detail.
